What could happen if numerous churches were to collaborate for a common purpose greater than promoting our individual churches? Christmas on 84th Street is the first attempt at 3 churches, joining together to create an environment where the presence of Christ is experienced and respond to the needs of those less fortunate. That’s what Christmas is all about!

Sounds of the Season

Imagine Christmas: Some things are too big for words, too hard to put down in writing.  Christmas can be one of those things.  It’s difficult to fully take in the gravity of this event.  But try to imagine it for a moment.  Imagine how absurd it must have seemed to the angels, that this God of glory and majesty would become a baby in a barn.  Imagine the awe and the wonder of the shepherds when the angels brought them good news!  Imagine the joy and mystery that Mary knew and treasured in her heart.  Imagine the celebration at the coming of the newborn King.

In a nutshell, that’s Imagine Christmas, featured this year as part of Christmas on 84th Street.  It’s a chance to imagine how marvelous, how spectacular, how peculiar, how perfect, how amazing God’s love for us is, that He would put on flesh and become man to redeem mankind.  Imagine Christmas features traditional carols set to contemporary music, drama, art, dance, song, color, sights and sounds to inspire awe and wonder.

Handel’s Messiah: There’s a timelessness about Christmas and Christmas traditions.  Carols like “Jingle Bells” remind us of a time of horse-drawn sleighs.  “Stockings hung by the chimney with care,” evergreen trees, and hot cocoa retell us our own stories of days long past.  And at the heart of Christmas is a tale older than time of a Savior born in a small town that would change the world.

Within the rich tradition of the season is Handel’s Messiah, a combination of song and Scripture that tells the oldest of stories and reminds us that the glory of God came down to dwell among men.  This year at Christmas on 84th Street you can enjoy an abridged version of this classical piece featuring choir, soloists, and an ensemble orchestra.  This powerful piece can remind you how awesome is the glory of God, and how amazing is His gift to us at Christmas.
